Tickets & Booking
Do I need an online ticket with a time slot for Castel Sant'Angelo?
In the high season (April to October) and at weekends, it is almost always worth booking a time slot ticket in advance - queues of 30 to 60 minutes regularly form at the box office, especially in the mornings. In the off-season and in the afternoons, you can often get in quickly, even spontaneously. If you only have a single time slot available, you should book in advance - whether officially via CoopCulture or with one of the third-party providers.
How much does a standard ticket for Castel Sant'Angelo cost?
Officially via CoopCulture, the standard ticket with time slot is around €16. With third-party providers GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout, the price range starts at around €20 - usually including an audio guide and immediate confirmation. Guided tours with a live guide start at around €35. You can find the current comparison on the homepage.
Can I cancel my ticket or tour?
Regular tickets for Castel Sant'Angelo cannot usually be canceled - neither officially via CoopCulture nor with third-party providers. Guided tours with GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout can usually be canceled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start of the tour. The exact conditions are always clearly stated on the respective product page - check them before paying.
Are there discounted tickets for children, students or senior citizens?
Yes, but the regulations vary depending on the provider. EU citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 receive a discounted ticket (around €2) with the official ticket. Children under the age of 18 are often admitted free of charge, but must present a free reservation. With third-party providers, discounts are automatically displayed during the booking process - show ID or proof on site.
Is the ticket on my cell phone sufficient or do I have to print it out?
With all three third-party providers (GetYourGuide, Tiqets, Headout), the mobile ticket on your cell phone is sufficient. After booking, you will receive an email with a QR code, which you show at the entrance. A digital version of the official ticket is usually also possible - if in doubt, have a PDF with you.

On-site visit
How long should I plan for the visit?
Plan around 1.5 to 2 hours for Castel Sant'Angelo if you want to walk through all the floors to the roof terrace at your leisure. With an audio guide or guided tour, you should allow 2 to 2.5 hours. If you only take in the highlights, you can complete the fortress in around an hour.
How strict is the security check?
The checks are similar to those at airports: bags are x-rayed, glass water bottles and larger sharp objects are not permitted. In peak season, the queue at the entrance can take 10 to 15 minutes - plan this into your time slot and be there 15 minutes before the booked time.
What can I take in my rucksack?
Small backpacks and handbags are permitted without any problems. Large rucksacks (hiking size), suitcases, tripods, drones and larger sharp objects are not permitted. You may take a plastic bottle of water with you - highly recommended in summer. There is no luggage storage at Castel Sant'Angelo.
Is Castel Sant'Angelo barrier-free?
Only limited access. Parts of the mausoleum and some exhibition areas are accessible via elevators. Hadrian's helix-shaped ramp, the papal chambers on the upper floor and, above all, the roof terrace with its view of the angels are only accessible to a limited extent or not at all via stairs and narrow spiral staircases. If you are dependent on accessibility, you should contact the official CoopCulture website or the museum directly in advance.
Are there toilets and a café in Castel Sant'Angelo?
Yes, both are available. Toilets can be found in the inner courtyard and on one of the upper levels. A small café with snacks, drinks and coffee is located on an intermediate terrace with a view of Rome - ideal for a short break before climbing up to the roof terrace. The selection is limited; you're more likely to find a full lunch in the trattorias in the Borgo district next door.

Guided tours & audio guide
Is a guided tour worthwhile or is an audio guide enough?
Both have their justification. An audio guide is perfectly adequate if you want to explore Castel Sant'Angelo at your own pace and only want to take in the most important background information about the mausoleum, papal apartments and angel statue. A guided tour with a live guide is worthwhile if you want to delve deeper into stories such as Tosca, the Passetto di Borgo or the life of the popes - and ask questions directly. Families and architecture fans will benefit most from a tour.
In which languages are tours and audio guides available?
Audio guides are usually available in English, Italian, French, Spanish and sometimes German - depending on the provider. Live tours are mainly offered in English and Italian, German-language tours are less common and usually only available on certain days. On the product page of the respective provider, you can see which languages are available for your desired date before booking.
Are tours with Passetto di Borgo access available?
The Passetto di Borgo - the medieval passageway between Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican - is not normally open to the public. However, there are special, time-limited tours, especially in the high season. If you are interested, search specifically for „Passetto di Borgo“ or „Passetto Tour“ with the third-party providers and check availability for your travel dates.
Can I go to the roof terrace without a tour?
Yes, the roof terrace with the famous panorama of Rome is included in the standard admission and is freely accessible to all visitors. You don't need to book a guided tour. From the roof, you have a 360° view of St. Peter's Basilica, the Tiber and the historic city center - one of the most beautiful vantage points in the city.

Arrival & combination with other sights
What is the best way to get to Castel Sant'Angelo?
Castel Sant'Angelo is centrally located in the Borgo district, directly on the banks of the Tiber. Take the metro to Lepanto (line A) and walk for around 12 minutes. Bus lines 40, 62 and 64 stop nearby. From the Vatican / St. Peter's Basilica it is only a 10-minute walk along Via della Conciliazione. From Termini Central Station, you can reach Castel Sant'Angelo in around 25 minutes by bus or cab.
Can I combine Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican in one day?
Yes - the two sights are only around 10 minutes' walk apart. A tried and tested order is: Vatican Museums + Sistine Chapel in the morning (with a booked time slot), short lunch break in the Borgo, then Castel Sant'Angelo in the afternoon. This way you avoid the biggest Vatican queues at lunchtime and see Rome from two very different perspectives - one from the inside, the other from the roof.
Are there combined tickets with the Vatican?
Yes, especially at Headout you can find combination tickets that bundle Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican Museums / Sistine Chapel - usually with a small price advantage and a logical tour sequence. GetYourGuide and Tiqets offer similar bundles with different focuses. Compare content and price before booking - a combination is particularly worthwhile if you are planning both highlights in one trip anyway.
Is Castel Sant'Angelo included in a Rome City Pass?
Admission to Castel Sant'Angelo is usually included in the classic Roma Pass - but even then you need to reserve a time slot. The Omnia Vatican & Rome Card also includes Castel Sant'Angelo in many variants. If you only want to visit Castel Sant'Angelo, a one-way ticket is cheaper; if you are planning to visit several other museums, you can save money with the pass.

Opening hours & season
When is Castel Sant'Angelo open?
Castel Sant'Angelo is open daily from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm - last admission is usually 6:30 pm. Monday is usually a day of rest (but in some seasons it is also open, check the official website for the current date). The entrance doors open on time; those who arrive early have the quietest atmosphere and the best light in the inner courtyard.
Which months are particularly busy - and which are relaxed?
Peak season is from April to October, with peaks in July, August and on bridge weekends. During this time, it is almost always worth booking a time slot in advance. The quietest months are January and February (cold, but few tourists) and early November. Spring (March/April) and late October are a good middle ground in terms of weather and manageable visitor numbers.
Are there special days when Castel Sant'Angelo is closed?
Yes, Castel Sant'Angelo is closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year's Day (January 1). There may be reduced opening hours or special events on other Italian public holidays. Before traveling on a public holiday, always check the official CoopCulture website or the third-party provider to see if the desired time slot is available.
